DISTOMO

Distomo is located at a distance of 25 km from Livadeia, in the south-west part of Viotia prefecture. The municipality includes the municipal departments of Distomo and Stiri. Stiri is built in an altitude of 450 metres, at the foot of the mount Elikonas. At a distance of 9 km from Distomo, in the Corinthian Gulf, the beach of Distomo and the settlements Aspra Spitia and Aghios Nikolaos are found.
At the antiquity, the cities Amvrissos (or Amvrossos) and Stirida were situated in the area of Distomo. Amvrissos was destroyed at 480 b.C. from Persians and later from Philippos V' at the third Holy War. The city was also occupied by Romans at 198 b.C and destroyed from Galatians and Celts at 250 a.C. During the Byzantine period the city was renamed from Amvrissos to Distomo, probably from a well with two outlets that existed there. In 1200 a.C., Distomo was occupied by Francs, in 1300 by Katalans and in 1460 by Turks.

Ancient Stirida was at the peak for many centuries, but it was destroyed by Philippos V' at 346 b.C., it was rebuilt and destroyed again from Romans at 147 b.C. In ancient texts the existence of another city named Medeon is reported. Medeon was a coastal city built on the hill of Aghion Theodoron. The city of Medeon communicated with the city of Stirida via towers - observatories.

The recent history of Distomo is very important. In the locality “Tria Elata ("Three Firs") Athanassios Diakos swore to be the head of the armed fight of Greeks against Turks. (25 March 1821). On 7 January 1827 the battle of Distomo was carried out with leader Georgios Karaiskakis. The victory of the Greeks in this battle meant the final removal of Turks from the region.

During German possession, Distomo constituted the centre of many events. On 24 April 1944 the enemies executed 134 persons in the locality "Karakolithos".
Distomo is also related to one of the most horrible crimes of the war. On 10 June 1944, Germans killed 218 residents (between them old people, children and women) and then burned the whole village.
